Rockies Journey for High School Students

Based in Kananaskis, this program takes place in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta, the traditional territories of the Îyârhe Nakoda Nations, Niitsitapi Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina and the Métis Nation (Alberta, District 4).

Youth ages 14-18 are invited to join this 6-day Rockies Journey in Kananaskis. The Rockies Journey will provide participants with the opportunity to reconnect with themselves, with nature, and with community through outdoor experiences alongside Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, certified outdoor educators, and wellness experts. Participants will build outdoor leadership skills, learn about conservation in the Rockies, discover tools for personal wellness, and have fun!

Program Overview.

  • Afternoon: Arrival and introductions

    Evening: Opening with Indigenous Elders

  • Morning: Hike with an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper

    Afternoon: Nature-based wellness workshop

    Evening: A night of star stories

  • Morning: Yoga and nature journalling

    Afternoon: Volunteering outside

    Evening: Bannock making workshop

  • Morning: Workshop on communication and community

    Afternoon: Intro to canoeing

    Evening: Movie night

  • Morning: Conservation and eco-action

    Afternoon: Nature-based art

    Evening: Music and games

  • Morning: Preparing your wellness toolkit

    Afternoon: Reflection and closing circle

Cost: $150 Deposit Fee

Program takes place at the Barrier Lake Field Station (owned and operated by the University of Calgary’s Biogeoscience Institute). Accommodation and food are provided. Limited cell service and wifi.
